What medications are used to treat infertility?
Many couples – about 6.7 million – experience difficulties with infertility and becoming pregnant. The good news is that finding a solution for infertility, whether through treatments, medication, or a combination of both, is possible. Fertility specialists at Oregon Reproductive Medicine have a proven track record of some of the highest success rates in the nation for helping couples achieve and carry a full-term, healthy baby after they have previously experienced infertility.
Infertility is a term that applies to couples that have been actively trying to become pregnant over several months but have not been able to conceive. Like with all medical procedures, the specifics of medications and/or treatments are discussed only after a complete medical assessment is performed on both the male and female. After determining whether infertility lies with the female or male partner, our specialists will decide on the best option to remedy the problem, whether it’s via fertility medication, lifestyle adjustments to diet and exercise, or even in vitro fertilization. Whether or not medications are involved, or whether there are other non-medication treatments depends on each individual case.
Because there is no single test for deducing the cause of infertility, diagnostic tools include:
- Interviews that cover health, medication, and reproductive history
- Tests of the uterus, including a saline infusion sonogram
- Tests of the fallopian tubes, including a hysterosalpingogram
- Tests of the ovaries
- Tests of the cervix
- Semen analysis
Are Infertility Medications right for you?
After a full medical assessment is made, specialists with then discuss all the available options for treating infertility and decide which treatments or medications will yield the best results. There are a few types of medications used to treat infertility:
Oral Medications or Injectable Medication
These medications increase fertility by stimulating ovulation through the release of gonadotropins from the pituitary gland. They often accompany other treatments.
PCOS Treatments
Medication that helps the body process insulin better can help treat PCOS, as can fertility drugs that increase the production of female hormones. Weight loss also benefits some women. Treatments not involving medication include:
IUI (Intra Uterine Insemination)
A type of treatment in which sperm is washed and introduced directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation.
IVF (In Vitro Fertilization)
This treatment uses assisted reproductive technology to fertilize a woman’s eggs outside her body.
Egg Donation
Egg donations allow an embryo to be created with either male or female factor infertility or both.
