Deciding Between Fresh or Frozen Donor Eggs
Deciding if frozen or fresh egg donation is right for your journey will depend on several factors that are specific to your family plans, which may include: how large of a family you are planning, your budget, your timetable, the type of donation you prefer (anonymous, identity-disclosed, or open), and the type of genetic screening that you wish to be completed.
Frozen eggs may be better suited to those hoping for only one child, who are not looking for an open donor, and who are satisfied with the level of genetic screening provided with frozen eggs.
Fresh egg donation may be better suited to those hoping for more than one child, who are looking for an open donor, who prefer more completed genetic screening, and for couples with two sperm providers that both wish to be a genetic parent.
Frozen donor eggs are a good choice for family building in certain circumstances. If you are interested in using frozen donor eggs please talk to your provider to determine suitability for your personal family-building needs.
Quantities of Frozen Eggs Received
Frozen eggs are generally available in groups (cohorts) of 6-8 frozen eggs. A single cohort is unlikely to result in sufficient embryos for more than one child. Patients can often purchase more than one cohort from the same donor. Multiple cohorts may be required to achieve your family plans.
Success Rates of Frozen Vs Fresh Eggs
Frozen donor eggs have a lower live birth rate compared to fresh donor eggs.
Fresh donor eggs with a fresh embryo transfer:
- National US Live birth rate 56% per embryo
- ORM live birth rate around 66% per embryo
Frozen donor eggs with a fresh embryo transfer:
- National US Live birth rate 44% per embryo
- Estimated ORM live birth rate 54% per embryo based on national difference
Process for Using Frozen Egg Bank Donor Eggs
There are typically five steps in the process of using frozen eggs.
Pre-Cycle Screening
Pre-cycle screening of the sperm provider and recipient, unless a surrogate pregnancy is planned, should be completed at the start of treatment.
Carrier screening of the sperm provider should be completed before the selection of frozen eggs.
Sperm Deposit
The sperm provider completes his sperm deposit at ORM in Portland or Seattle (Bellevue), or at an approved non-ORM facility in the US or internationally.
In cases where patients are working with a sperm donor, our team can provide information on sperm bank options.
Frozen Eggs Selection
Patients should consult the database of ORM’s frozen egg bank partners.
Prior to purchasing a cohort of frozen eggs, a review of the carrier screening of the donor and the sperm provider needs to be completed.
Embryo Creation
The frozen eggs are shipped to ORM. The frozen eggs and sperm are thawed for fertilization. Embryos are created and tested (if selected) and then frozen, unless a fresh transfer is planned.
Guarantees regarding embryo creation are provided by the frozen egg bank.
Embryo Transfer
The recipient or gestational carrier will undergo the embryo transfer at ORM, either in Portland or Seattle (Bellevue).
Pre and post-transfer monitoring of the recipient or gestational carrier is carried out at ORM at an approved facility wherever the recipient or surrogate live.
